McCook basketball teams winless at Holdrege

HOLDREGE -- The McCook boys basketball team fell behind by 10 points after the first quarter, on its way to a 60-47 loss at Holdrege on Saturday.

The Dusters extended the lead to 14 after the second to lead 29-15 at halftime.

"We struggled in the first quarter," said McCook coach Steve Nicholson.

We didn't match their intensity."

Holdrege held on in the second half, dropping McCook to 2-4 on the season.

Brenden Liess led the Bison in scoring with 11 points. Tony Purvis and Brian Winder each added 9 points.

Hodrege's Pat Ackerman had a game high 28 points to lead the Dusters. Nick Weaver added 10 points for Holdrege.

"We got a few players in foul trouble, but still, the kids managed to play hard and make sure Holdrege didn't 'cruise' to a victory," said Nicholson.

McCook will be in action next at the GNAC tournament on Dec 29-31 in Grand Island.

The McCook girls basketball team fell in Holdrege 54-34 on Saturday.

Holdrege dominated the first half, outscoring the Bison 35-13.

Jillian Bryant scored 9 and Allison Smith 8 points to lead McCook.

There were three Dusters in double figures.

Lindsay Anderson scored 14, Jaci Dick 13, and Melissa Hobbs 11 for Holdrege.

McCook falls to 2-4 on the season and will play at the GNAC tournament in Grand Island on Dec 27-29.

Brett Burton led the Bison with 14 points. Garrett Rippen added 9.

Kyle Bell and Adam Fulmer each scored 11 for Holdrege. John Goodwin added 10 for the Dusters.

TRENTON -- The Hitchcock County boys basketball team defeated Medicine Valley 55-36 on Saturday.

The Falcons led by one at halftime, only to pull away in the second quarter.

Adam Wright and Chancy Carlson each scored 16 points to lead Hitchcock County.

Josh Nutt led Medicine Valley with 15 points.

Medicine Valley is 0-6 on the year and will play unbeaten Wallace on Tuesday.

Hitchcock County improves to 4-6 and will play next at the Cambridge Holiday Tournament on Jan 3-4.

ST. FRANCIS -- The Oberlin boys basketball team improved to 3-3 this season with a win on the road.

Oberlin defeated St. Francis 53-47.

The Red Devils jumped out to a 15-7 first quarter lead, but St. Francis would close the lead three at halftime, thanks to a 2 of 12 shooting effort from Oberlin in the second period.

St. Francis closed the lead to two points after the third, but Oberlin edged the Indians by four in the fourth quarter to pick up the victory.

Lance Fortin scored 19 to lead Oberlin. Teryn Grafel added 14 points.

"Lance really stepped up," said Oberlin Coach Dick Ahlberg, "he was our go to guy."

Adam Peter led St. Francis in scoring with 15 points and Joel McAtee added 12 for the Indians.

St. Francis falls to 2-3 on the year.

COZAD -- Megan Becker dumped in 20 points and Macenzie Quinn 16 as the Southern Valley girls basketball team defeated Cozad 50-37 on Saturday.

After taking a two point lead into halftime, the Eagles slowly pulled away in the second, outscoring Cozad by five in the third and six in the fourth quarters.

Southern Valley is now 5-1 on the season and will play at the Cambridge Holiday Tournament on Jan 3-4.

Janae Harris and Kiane Alberts scored 10 points each for the Broncos.

Terra Bishop and Mary Gohl each had 9 points for Hayes Center.

Wauneta-Palisade is now 5-1, and will host Medicine Valley on Dec 30.

Hayes Center falls to 4-3 and will host Maywood on Dec 30.
