Cambridge boys, girls roll in openers

CAMBRIDGE -- Waid Vontz dropped in 30 points, on nine of 20 shooting, to lead the reigning Class C2 state champion, which now plays in D1, Cambridge to a victory over Hitchcock County in the season opener for both teams, 68-40.

After taking a 20-4 first quarter lead, 38-16 at the half, Cambridge never looked back.

Hitchcock County did outscore the Trojans ,14-13, in the third quarter, but it was too little, too late, as Cambridge would finish the Falcons off in the fourth, 17-10.

Anthony Lytle was also in double figures for Cambridge with 12 points. Lytle led the Trojans with eight rebounds.

John Thompson led Hitchcock County with 12 points and six rebounds. Adam Wright added 10 for the Falcons.

Cambridge edged Hitchcock County in the rebound category, 39-34.

The Falcons also committed 24 turnovers, compared to 15 for Cambridge.

Cambridge will host Eustis-Farnam tonight.

CAMBRIDGE -- The Cambridge girls basketball team had four in double figures, as the Trojans defeated Hitchcock County, 92-33.

Cambridge was led by Kaitlin Deaver's 18 points, followed by Staci Moore with 17, Andi Langley with 16 and Shelby Schultz with 10.

Kymbie Lytle led Cambridge in rebounds with eight.

Melanie Keelick led Hitchcock County with 10 points. Jennifer Sydow led the Falcons with five rebounds.

Cambridge will host Eustis-Farnam tonight.

Andrew Winscot led Southern Valley with 12 points. Chase Quinn added 10 points and Mike Powell chipped in nine points. Powell led the Eagles with six rebounds.

OXFORD -- The Southern Valley girls basketball team, ranked 10th in Huskerland Prep Report, edged Minden for a win in the first game of the season for both teams, 49-46.

Macenzie Quinn led all scorers with 13 points. Megan Becker and Janae Perkins added a couple of double-doubles for Southern Valley.

Becker had 12 points and 10 rebounds while Perkins added 11 points and grabbed a game high 12 boards.

Southern Valley picked up the win despite making 28 turnovers. Minden committed 12 turnovers. The Eagles did outrebound Minden, 35-21.

Brown also dished out five assists and had four steals.

Joseph Frecks had 13 rebounds to lead the Cardinals, which outrebounded Mullen 36-21.

Mary Gohl and Terra Bishop each recorded a double-double for Hayes Center. Gohl led the team in scoring 14 points with 11 rebounds. Bishop added 10 points and also had 11 rebounds.

BENKLEMAN -- The St. Francis Indians defeated Dundy County in boys basketball season opening action yesterday, 68-47.

St. Francis took a 17 point lead into the half. The Indians then outscored Dundy County 29-25 in the second half to close out the win.

St. Francis' Joel McAtee led all scorers with 18 points. A.J. McAtee chipped in 11 and J.D. Hawkins added 10 points for the Indians.

Kyle Glidden led Dundy County with 17 points.

Vanessa Shill was the high scorer in the game, scoring 18 points. Shill also recorded 11 steals. Heather Morris added eight for the Tigers. Echo Steele had 11 rebounds to go with her seven points.

Megan Rice led the Indians with 10 points. Grace McKenzie added nine points for St. Francis.
