Letter to the Editor

Not censorship

Wednesday, November 24, 2004

Dear Editor,

In response to the idea of the painting being censorship on Mrs. Latta's part, I would have to disagree.

I have a 6-year-old first grader at North Ward, who did happen to see this particular painting.

I have raised my child to be open to learning new things, but in my opinion, I feel that the painting should have been covered prior to elementary-aged children arriving at the exhibit.

I was not prepared to have my daughter come home to tell me what she had seen that day at school. I believe I should not have been put into that position, and that precautions should have been taken in advance to prevent young eyes from seeing that painting and or any painting with such content.

If one parent thinks it is not right to do so, then so be it, that is her opinion. But as for mine, I am an open minded parent who fully stands behind Mrs. Latta's concern in protecting my child from seeing something that she is too young to have seen.

Marissa Michaelsen,

McCook
