Letter to the Editor

Committee responds

Monday, November 1, 2004

Dear Editor,

I am writing in response to the Open Forum titled Vote for Stability. Nothing in that letter could be farther from the truth.

The long-ago formed Southwest Nebraska Economic Security Committee believes in the fair and equitable allocations of water. There are many reasons for the depletion of surface water, most of which is no rain, no snow and no runoff to fill the lakes and streams. And, last but certainly not least, the non-management of high water use vegetation in and along the stream and lake beds.

There is no doubt that water generates business, but in what some are calling a 500-year-drought, it's hard to change an act of God; everyone is impacted.

The water users have followed all the laws, rules and regulations, since the multi-state water compact was signed in 1943 and then never updated.

The state took my surface water rights, but common sense tells me I cannot blame ground water irrigators for stream flows. If the incumbents have been working for eight years on this, why are we in this situation now? If this is not a vote for term limits, I don't know what is. Vote for new representation.

Respectfully submitted,

Darold Ebmeier,

Maywood
