Family conference set for Nov. 6

Families are invited to attend the fifth annual "Families Are Special" Conference on Saturday, Nov. 6 at the McCook High School.

Ron Willis from Green Porch Swing Productions, will be the keynote speaker for the conference. Willis' keynote is entitled "In Case We Need to Eat Our Words, Let's Make Sure Some Are Sweet and Tender." Ron Willis will remind us of sensitive principles of communication with others who are frustrated and frustrating. His message also services as a wonderful review when communicating with those we are privileged to live with and love.

Other speakers include Pam Gaston of Pet Pros, and Christina Walker, Extension Educators Andrea Nisley, Leslie Crandall; Extension Assistant, Lorinda Elson; Carlos Trevino, Nebraska State Patrol; Loretta Hauxwell and Judy Malone, McCook Community College; Kendra Leonhardt, MS RPT-S; Janie Peterson, M.H.D., LMHP; Lynse Schmidt, School Psychologist, McCook Public Schools; Patty Hall, McCook Public Library; Jo Bingham, Partners In Parenting and Michelle Gonzales, McCook YMCA. Workshop sessions offered throughout the day include: Pet Power Tools, Taming the Wild Wired West, The Childhood Obesity Epidemic, Teens & Tweens-The Wonder Years, Drugs-What Every Parent Must Know and much more!

The conference is for families, grandparents, foster parents and anyone who works with children including child care providers, preschool teachers, teachers and anyone interested in the well being of children and families. Children ages 8-12 are welcome to attend sessions with their parents as well as the special KIDZ Sessions planned just for them. Childcare will be provided for children ages 7 and under.

The conference is co-sponsored by the Southwest Nebraska Early Childhood Coalition, Partners In Parenting, University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension, Family Resource Center, Community Action Partnership of Mid-Nebraska Head Start, Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services, Memorial United Methodist Church, McCook Community College, McCook Public Library, Southwest Public Schools and Parents. The conference is supported in part by a federal Early Childhood Care and Education Grant administered by the Nebraska Department of Education.
