McCook Bison tennis team slams Hershey 6-3

Wednesday, September 29, 2004

The McCook High School tennis team played its final home match Tuesday at the Bison tennis courts.

The Bison handed Hershey a 6-3 loss.

McCook will compete Saturday at Lexington at the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference Tournament.

The meet starts at 10 a.m.

"It was nice to give some of our younger players an opportunity to gain some varsity experience," said McCook tennis coach Matt Wiemers. "I felt they gave a great effort and played well.

"Our junior varsity needs to become more consistent and aggressive. They have improved so much since the first week of practice and it was nice for them to play some stiffer competition. I would like to thank them all for their dedication and hard work this season. They have been fun to work with and did a good job of learning the game.

"Brian and Jared played the best matches of their season. I'm glad to see them finish the season with a well played match.

"They have been valuable to me on and off the court. Scott and Jack played close matches but just couldn't find a way to close them out.

"I'm glad they will be around for a couple of more weeks, the extra matches will be of great purpose to them.

"They both have potential to develop into key players next year. They like to compete and are eager to learn and play."

McCook pushed its duel record to 9-1 and will play its toughest part of the schedule over the next week, said Wiemers.

"The rest of the season we will scale back to eight players. So it will be nice to have the court time available to the team. The next three days will be crucial for our success at GNAC Saturday.

"The team is excited for the challenge and they look forward to playing the excellent competition offered."
