OBERLIN -- Ross VanPelt, 75, died Sunday (June 20, 2004) at Decatur Health Systems in Oberlin.

He was born Aug. 16, 1928, to Will and Myrtle (Fowler) VanPelt in Kansas City, Mo. He was raised in Decatur County where he attended country school. He was a graduate of Decatur County High School.

He served as an Army corporal in World War II.

On Sept. 26, 1948, he married Dorothy Ann Ruby in Sept. 26, 1948, in Danbury. They resided in Danbury until 1949, when they moved to a farm northeast of Oberlin. In 1984, they moved into Oberlin. He was a farmer.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW, serving over 20 years as Sergeant at Arms.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and stepfather, Ivan Cochran.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy VanPelt of Oberlin; one son, Wesley James VanPelt of Lafayette, Colo.; three daughters, Billie Jo Rubinfeld of Lancaster, Calif., Maria Wonzniak and husband, Gary of Colby, Kan., and Barbara Tally of Oberlin; and eight grandchildren.

Services are Friday, 10:30 a.m., at the Oberlin Cemetery with the Rev. Mike McVay officiating. Interment will be Oberlin Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Oberlin American Legion Military Funeral Detail.
