Do something unexpected for your Valentine

Saturday, February 14, 2004

'Tis the sweetest of holidays ... this special celebration we call Valentine's Day. And what a nice day it is this year. It's a Saturday, first of all, but more than that, it's a pleasant day weather-wise, with temperatures not too warm and not too cold, just right for cuddling and closeness.

Ah, yes.

If you don't have a sweetie, maybe this is the day to start your pursuit. You probably know, deep down, who your special guy or girl is. Don't be shy. Tell them. That's what Valentine's Day is all about.

Believe it or not, the holiday has been around for more than 700 years, which is 30 generations, give or take a few. Among the many theories about the origin of Valentine's Day is a fable from England. According to an Old English belief, February 14th is an appropriate day for lovers because this is the day when birds choose their mates.

What do you love birds think about that?

As Valentine's Day evolved, other customs came into the picture. In Britain and Italy, for example, there was a time that unmarried women arose before sunrise on Valentine's Day. They stood by their windows watching for a man to pass by. It was their belief that they would marry the first man they saw that day within a year. If the man was already attached, the unmarried ladies would settle for someone who looked like him. That would sure make this match-making thing a lot easier, wouldn't it?

Oh, well. Enough history. What about you and your celebration of Valentine's Day? Are you having fun yet? Is the love of your life aware of your deep and abiding affection?

We know all about the traditional expressions -- flowers, chocolate, jewelry and anything red, especially gifts in the shape of hearts. Those are great, They are oh, so special when given and received in love.

But, in addition, let's surprise that special person today with something extra. It should be fun, and, what the heck, it could even be fattening, but let's go for it!

The important thing is that this special Valentine's gift is not expected. Do the dishes. Sweep the garage. Have a pillow fight. Go for a walk in the moonlight. The possibilities are endless. It's just important -- in traditional or non-traditional ways -- to ask that time-honored question: "Will You Be My Valentine?" And, hey, if you're lucky, your favorite Valentine may even say yes.
