Santa confesses

Wednesday, December 24, 2003

Dear Editor,

As this is my 20th year Santa Clausing in McCook, I give GOD thanks for the gift.

The best story this year, has to be a little 6-year-old boy who ask me for a Hamster (not that uncommon). But he continued, "I also want a 6-foot boa constrictor snake," as an afterthought he said "if it ain't to much trouble can you put them in separate cages?!"

I said "Santa Claus' bag might get real interesting if I don't."

I had four widows tell of losing their husbands this last year and asked Santa for them back. I gave them all I could, by saying if you think of him, he is here with you.

Many adults Santa spoke with said they planned to live on less money this coming year with almost everything jumping from massive water bills to Medical drugs, a sense of hopelessness.

So I give them my own story of the lion and the mouse: Some years back a billion-dollar corporation came to McCook.

Their area manager came to my tiny store. Angry that I had been there for 15 years he said, "I don't know how you got started nor how you stay in business but in 6 weeks, I will run you out of business!"

Two years later the billion- dollar company left town. Now 20 years later, I have held on by a shoestring.

Some times the mouse does win!

Merry Christmas:

Bill Donze
