GRAND ISLAND -- The McCook Bison girls basketball team got a lesson in physical play from Grand Island Northwest Saturday night.

The Bison were outrebounded 42-28, shot 23 percent from the field and lost to the Vikings 49-28 at the GINW gymnasium.

McCook (1-1) will play three games Thursday through Saturday at the Goodland (Kan.) Topside Tipoff Classic.

The Bison take on Wray, Colo., at 9 p.m. CST (8 p.m. MST) Thursday in the first round.

The Bison boys (1-1) play Wray at 7 p.m. CST (6 p.m. MST) Thursday.

GINW outscored McCook 10-2 in the first quarter and 26-12 at halftime. The Bison were often limited to just one shot on the offensive end, said coach Bill Beckenhauer.

"We didn't perform very well offensively," he said. "Our execution was not very good. Because of the physical nature of the game, we didn't shoot well.

"We had very few offensive rebounds. It's tough to beat a team when that happens. We play a lot of games. Games are learning experiences. Not all learning experiences are good."

Lindsey Dame led the Bison with 9 points.

Michelle Gaunt scored 7, Maggie Jones 4, Amanda Bennett 2, Kassi Cunningham 2, Jillian Bryant 2 and Lisa Friehe 2.

Jill Geist led the Vikings with 1o points.

GINW made 15-of-35 field goal attempts and 17-of-29 free throws.

Jones and Friehe each grabbed 6 rebounds and Bennett dished off 3 assists.
