Great finish Herndon Beavers!

Thursday, November 20, 2003

Dear Editor,

I want to take a few lines to say that once every so often you regret you let certain things go by. For years, I had been wanting to get down to Herndon and watch a six-man football game. Upon hearing last spring that this would be my last chance to do so, I took in the last part of the season.

It was a nice fulfillment to Walt Sehnert's article. It had been over 10 years since I had been to one. At once, I really enjoyed the game from the start. It was a great last homecoming and a really well played game. I was just amazed at how well coaches Becker and Grafel had worked with these kids and how well each player executed their game. I will enjoy very much watching the Bison take on their task this weekend, but it seems as though a lot of people have branded six-man football as some kind of inferior game. I was absolutely convinced that this is not the case. Each player is required to do so many things. Various people around me came to the game for the same reason and they had not seen a six-man game and really enjoyed the type of game it is. Each and every play is challenging to the defense.

I want to again commend the coaches, managers and especially the team for an excellent finish of an era of football you are leaving behind that fans of Northwest Kansas and Southwest Nebraska enjoyed.

You can be proud of the fact that only one team in your entire region beat you. Wow -- what an accomplishment for a handful of players with numerous injuries during the season.

Some of you even thanked fans for coming to your playoff game that you didn't even know.

I was one of those fans. for you underclassmen that are transferring, without a doubt, you will be a contributor to the team you play for. For you, seniors, have a great remainder of the year, and to all of you -- good luck in your basketball season!
