Wonderful walnuts

Donze's backyard black walnut harvest.

Dear Editor,

Back in 1979, I collected some nuts from Torsten Anderson north of Max. His tree at that time was right at 100 years old. (I) planted them, and in seven years we got our first nuts.

Now the largest tree is near 35 feet high and is loaded with black walnuts.

We have picked up three barrels full and are nearly half done.

The uses of this nut are too many to list, but if it were just to make black walnut apple pie, that would be enough.

There are many more uses, from making herbicide to pesticides and to stun fish or drive off predators.

So, a tree that can shade, feed and give you a cash crop for 150 years ain't a bad thing to have in your yard or even on a few acres.

Future generations will bless you for the $1,000 a tree, in lumber, you leave them.

Bill Donze
