Project expanded to include viaduct approaches

McCook Daily Gazette/Gloria Masoner Paulsen Inc. crews begin the work on the sidewalks on the north side of B Street at East Second.

The B Street renovation project will expand to include south US-83 beginning Monday, according to Kurt Vosburg, construction engineer.

The south approach to the railroad viaduct will have to be removed and replaced because of settlement, he said in a release.

As with other work on this project, the construction will be accomplished in phases to accommodate traffic. Starting Monday the two southbound lanes of US-83 will be closed and both directions of travel will be moved to the existing northbound or east lanes. When the southbound approach is completed, traffic will be reversed and the northbound approach will be replaced. Work is expected to take three to four weeks.

Work on "B" Street itself continues with the last of the intersections and driveways being poured this week. Electrical work including street lighting for the westbound lanes and traffic signals at West First, Norris Avenue, and East First is also being done. Attention next week will turn to constructing sidewalk on the north side of B Street.

All four lanes of B Street will be open through the winter months.

All 2003 work on the project is expected to be complete by the end of October. Temporary pavement has been constructed just east of East Fourth to tie this year's construction to existing pavement.

Work left to be completed on the project involves reconstruction from E 4th to E 7th, pavement patching on South US-83, and permanent pavement marking.

This work will be accomplished in spring and early summer 2004.

The prime contractor on the $3.2 million dollar project is Paulsen Inc. of Cozad Nebraska. The project begins just east of West Fourth Street and continues to just east of East Seventh Street on Highway US 6-34 in McCook. Work consists of replacing all of the concrete pavement, traffic signals, roadway lighting, water mains, and storm sewer system. In addition, bridge approach repairs and pavement patching will be accomplished on US-83 from the south corporate limits north to "B" Street. Completion of the project is expected in early summer 2004.
