GERING -- John G. Simmerman, 85, died Friday (Oct. 4, 2002) at the Heritage Health Care Center in Gering.

He was born Aug. 20, 1917, in McCook to Alva "Scot" R. and Jesse M. (Miner) Simmerman. He attended school in McCook, Bayard and graduated from Gering High School with the Class of 1935.

On Dec. 1, 1940, he married Laurene E. Dahlke in Gering. The couple lived in Gering, Kimball and Sidney throughout the years, while he worked at the Brown Bean Company, Gambles, Pacific Fruit, Panhandle Drug and Omaha School Equipment. He owned and operated the J & L Laundromats in the Gering/Scottsbluff areas until his retirement in 1986, a business that his son continues.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Laurene; and one sister, Jane Gray.

Survivors include his sons, J. Scot Simmerman and wife, Barb of Gering and Jack Simmerman and wife, Mary of Rock Springs, Wyo.; daughter, Jean Kues of Scottsbluff; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Tuesday, 10 a.m., at the West Lawn Cemetery in Gering with the Rev. Don Littrell officiating. Visitation is today until 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Prairie Haven Hospice.

Jolliffe Funeral Home of Scottsbluff is in charge of arrangements.
