Fuel standards opposed

Friday, February 15, 2002

Dear Editor,

You may be aware that the U.S. Senate will be considering legislation shortly that would increase Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards for passenger cars and light trucks. Such an increase could result in reduced availability of America's most popular vehicles, including SUVs and pickup trucks. This would have a devastating effect on the automobile industry and the consumers right to choose.

Last summer, the House of Representatives defeated an amendment that would have raised CAFE requirements to an unreasonable level. Now the Senate is considering proposals that are potentially more harmful.

There are several things that need to be done right away to have an impact on Washington.

Car dealers from throughout the nation are contacting their United States Senators, asking them to examine the adverse effect that this legislation would have on both the car companies and their customers.

Great strides have been made over the years with emissions and fuel economy, and further improvements are coming each model year.

If you feel your right of choice is being limited, we invite you to join the car dealers of the McCook area in challenging this legislation.

You can find out more about the pending legislation by visiting with local dealers, or by contacting Nebraska's U.S. Senators, Ben Nelson and Chuck Hagel.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Howard Kool

McCook
