With a ferris wheel as a beacon, Jason Friesen of Sutton roars around Turn 1 during Red Willow County fair races at McCook Speedway Thursday. Friesen won first place in the A feature of the late model competition. Evening activities at the fair continue today with a country music showdown at 6:30 p.m. and Christian music presentations at 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Professional rodeos take center stage Saturday and Sunday, at 8 p.m. both evenings. The new Southwest Nebraska rodeo queen will be announced at 7:45 p.m., Saturday. Monday's highlights will be the 4-H premium sale at 6 p.m., followed by the demolition derby at 8:30 p.m. Paige, 5, and Tessa, 3, are about to become believers that elephants really can fly. The Rien girls, along with many other enthusiastic children, endured the 100 plus temperatures in order to enjoy their favorite fair rides. The carnival rides at the Red Willow County Fair opened Thursday night and continue until Monday. Paige and Tessa are the daughters of Karla and Trevor Rien of Lincoln and the granddaughters of Duane and Marguerite Henn and Martin and Diane McCune, both of McCook.
