Authorities: Stay alert

Friday, October 25, 2002

With the first weekend of pheasant season approaching in Nebraska, hunters and other residents are being asked to stay alert for possible signs of terrorist attacks against transportation.

Gov. Mike Johanns asked Nebraskans to report any unusual activity they see around the state's transportation systems after the FBI issued a nationwide warning of a possible terrorist attack against transportation "We need to take these intelligence warnings seriously," Johanns said in a release Thursday. "Railroads are a special concern."

The governor urged people who see anything out of the ordinary to immediately call local law enforcement, the Nebraska State Patrol or the FBI.

Red Willow County Sheriff Gene Mahon said anyone who notices suspicious activity around the railroad, trucks, water supplies or other areas, should call 911.

Nebraska homeland security director Lt. Gov. Dave Heineman was informed of the new threat Wednesday night, the release said.

Heineman briefed Union Pacific Railroad, the Nebraska Department of Roads and the Nebraska State Patrol. Roads Director John Craig contacted Burlington Northern Santa Fe concerning the threat, the release said.
