New column recognizes good deeds

Thursday, August 7, 2003

Every day -- in so many ways -- the people of McCook and the surrounding region do an abundance of good deeds, helping their friends, families and communities with voluntary acts of service and sharing.

We say thanks whenever the opportunity presents itself, but many acts of kindness do not receive the recognition they deserve. Those doing good don't mind because it is the act, not the accolade, which is important to them.

Still, there is value in recognizing the good works of our fellow citizens. Above all, the helpful acts are an inspiration, giving us ideas and examples for making our own contributions to friends and neighbors.

With that in mind, the McCook Daily Gazette today introduces a new column, "Diary of Good Deeds," written by Diane Lyons of McCook.

The column, which starts on this page and is continued on page three, is a collection of good deeds brought to Diane's attention by phone calls, notes, e-mails and observations.

The "Diary of Good Deeds" will appear on a periodic basis in the Gazette, and -- at year's end -- will be celebrated in a special edition which will be inserted in the newspaper and distributed at the McCook Area Chamber of Commerce annual banquet.

Diane agreed to take on the task of collecting good deeds because of her affection for the community. "I love the open spaces, the slower pace and the positive environment in which to raise our family," she writes in her opening column.

The wife of Phil Lyons, an attorney and City Council member, Diane has an active life, operating Diane's Day Care and serving as a night class instructor at McCook Community College for office techniques. She also is a writer for the Bison Alumni Newsletter, doing the "In the Halls" column as well as other special articles.

Diane and Phil have three children: Laura, a student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; Christopher, a junior, and Julia, a sophomore, at McCook High school.

"Because of my day care duties, I don't get many chances to get out and about, so I really appreciate the phone calls. It's neat to hear all the stories of the good things people are doing," she said.

To collect good deeds for future "Diary" columns, Diane needs your help. When you witness special acts of service and sharing, give Diane a call at (308) 345-2189.
