Being a child of the 1950s, aside vaccines for polio, TB and smallpox, the rest of the ‘common diseases,’ mumps, measles, chicken pox, rubella, and whooping cough were in fact, common! Sick days were spent on the couch with grandma’s quilt while mom did her chores. I wasn’t watching TV either because someone said that any type of reading or watching television could, because of the illness, damage a young person’s eyes. The TV I didn’t really mind, but no books?...

McCOOK, Neb. - In honor of Arbor Day, the City of McCook planted a bare root American Linden tree at Russell Park Friday morning. The American Linden is a fast growing tree that can live up to 200 years, if planted correctly. Bruce Hoffman, certified arborist, demonstrated the correct way to plant a bareroot tree and said it was important to trim the roots and not plant too deeply.
