(Local News ~ 06/22/16)
McCOOK, Neb. -- The last thing Pam Wolford wanted to be was a teacher. But after taking repeated job aptitude tests during her senior year in high school, with all of them pointing toward education, she finally gave in. It must have been the right choice, because Wolford is ending her 33-year English-teaching career exactly where it started: at the McCook School District...

Political capital, not gun violence, main Senate target
(Editorial ~ 06/22/16)
One measure would ban gun sales to suspected terrorists. Another would deny gun sales to known or suspected terrorists as long as a judge agrees within three days. A third would expand background checks to private gun sales and a fourth would encourage states to share more information on suspected terrorists with the FBI...

We get more than our share of 'longest days'
(Column ~ 06/22/16)
While we were off lollygagging around all the planets that were -- and still are -- visible in the early evening, we missed a milestone for the year, the Summer Solstice (the first day of summer). Solstice is Latin for "Sun stands still," and while it doesn't actually, it would appear to do so for anyone who was watching the rising and setting times and locations each day...

Labor strikes?
(Letter to the Editor ~ 06/22/16)
If the socialists win this fall, it's time to take a play out of Poland's playbook. Massive labor strikes targeting the transportation industry. That's not to say the leaders of such a movement wouldn't need to be tough SOBs because I'm sure this fine government of ours would lock them up, which would bring more labor strikes. I think we could bring them to their knees and never fire a shot...

Fantasy, reality
(Letter to the Editor ~ 06/22/16)
It appears that the sponsors and the participants at McCook's Buffalo Commons Storytelling Festival (World-Herald June 10) are whistling their way through the graveyard of disappearing communities. McCook is the county seat of Red Willow County. Of Nebraska's 93 counties, Red Willow county shares a distinction with 72 others...

(Letter to the Editor ~ 06/22/16)
I am writing in response to Sen. Colby Coash's letter, "Too late to fix the death penalty," it made me decide to share some facts about the death penalty debate. Sen. Coash is on record for saying that the people should have the right to vote on the death penalty, but what most people don't know is that there was an amendment to the death penalty bill that would have placed the decision on the ballot in 2016 and would have eliminated the need for the petition drive...
