HERNDON, Kan. -- It's not common to have so many cast iron crosses in one cemetery, according to historian/lecturer Lori Halfhide of Concordia, Kan., after visiting St. Mary's Assumption Cemetery northwest of Herndon on June 10. Halfhide said that she suspects that a traveling salesman came through the area after a prairie fire wiped out the wooden crosses marking the graves of early settlers and sold cast iron crosses to remaining family members...
