Memories of Saturday mornings
(Column ~ 07/12/12)
AUTHOR'S NOTE: Although I hail from a large family, I have exactly one big brother, two years older than me. I think the two of us stack up pretty evenly; except for him being taller, stronger, funnier, better-looking, better-educated, more charismatic, more personable, more accomplished and more presentable in public, we're pretty much the same...

Paul supporters put Nebraska in spotlight
(Editorial ~ 07/12/12)
Nebraska is getting as much national political attention as it has since 1968, and Republican Party officials are hoping Grand Island doesn't turn into Chicago on Saturday. That's because they fear Ron Paul supporters from other states may disrupt the state convention in their effort to sway delegates to give Paul a majority and a chance to have his name put into nomination at the GOP national convention in Tampa, Florida...

Hope it's a mistake
(Letter to the Editor ~ 07/12/12)
Surface and groundwater users have had their disagreements over the years, but through it all I always felt like we could agree on a few things: We're all Nebraskans, we share more similarities than differences, and we, not someone else or some other state, are in the best position to address our issues...

Something for everyone this week
(Column ~ 07/12/12)
It seems that all the excitement is in the morning sky this week. Normally I am not a "morning astronomer." Unless there is something really worth getting up for, this week there is ample reason for getting up early. First, on the morning of Saturday, July 14, a slender crescent moon will be hanging out with the Pleiades star cluster. Look not quite halfway up the sky just above the eastern horizon about an hour before local sunrise...

911 Emergency: We got a Polly Pocket down
(Column ~ 07/12/12)
Just when you think you've covered all your bases, your kids still find some way to surprise you. Last weekend, my gracious dad agreed to keep my two youngest girls while Hubby and I took our oldest out of town to a softball tournament. The girls have stayed with him on other occasions but not quite for this long but I wasn't worried. I knew they'd have fun with Grandpa and the thought of not having to haul two extra kids to sit outside for three days in the hot sun was a welcome one...

Using Nebraska's resources to power our economy
(Column ~ 07/12/12)
As our economy struggles, the lack of bipartisan solutions from Congress only adds to our frustration. While House Republicans are working to reduce the burden of government, cut wasteful spending, and streamline government programs to encourage economic growth, not hinder it, more than thirty House-passed bills aimed at private sector job creation and growth have idled in the Democrat-led Senate. ...
