No raises
(Letter to the Editor ~ 07/14/11)
Editor, It seems to me that many folks are getting raises all over town, while NOT a single senior citizen has received a raise in years. Part of the reason for these "pay raises" are a direct result of unions affecting the police and fire departments. Just so everybody gets a fair shake -- all city employees and teachers are included too...

A disappointing view

I delayed starting this until I knew space shuttle Atlantis had launched this morning (Friday). It did, and it was almost on-time. Only three minutes late. This was the last launch of the last flying shuttle. After the STS-135 mission the space shuttle program will end...

Poor doggies
(Column ~ 07/14/11)
So, when I signed up for motherhood, I didn't realize I got to be mom not just to our kids but to our pets, too. We never had pets when the older girls were babies but when they were 3 and 5 years old we were living in Oklahoma and bought some property out in the country. Well, apparently, there's some unwritten rule that if you move out of town, you have to have animals, so right off the bat we got two adorable puppies...

'Horrible Bosses' a hilarious adult comedy
(Column ~ 07/14/11)
I've noticed that theatrically-released comedies tend to mirror a single generation's maturation process. Pleasant, G- and PG-rated family comedies fill the cineplexes until someone makes a more grown-up comic take on the genre, usually a turn towards less-genial wisecrackery and a little more bodily function humor. ...
