Bond issue vote leaves regrets for all
(Column ~ 10/04/01)
For the second year in a row, the voters have spoken. Last year, they rejected an extensive $12.6 million school bond issue to make improvements to the junior high, North Ward and East Ward, and close West Ward. Tuesday night, they rejected a pared-down, $9.7 million plan dealing only with the ward schools. Superintendent Jon Burkey noted that the vote failed by a slimmer margin this time, 965 for and 1,214 against, with about 400 fewer voters turning out to help make the decision...

Broken promises lead to American dream
(Features ~ 10/04/01)
When the Germans migrated to Russia in the late 1700's following a decree from Russian czarina, Catherine the Great, they had great hopes for the future. However, the time spent there was not what they had hoped for and many soon moved on to new dreams and new places, including Southwest Nebraska. These people are the focus of the October Display of the Month at the High Plains Museum in McCook...

There's something in the air
(Column ~ 10/04/01)
There's something in the air and it's not just fall. Have you noticed it? A friend of mine has had first- hand experience. One evening after work she misplaced her husband and dog. She searched and searched, but to no avail. My own husband hasn't done any disappearing acts, but I am beginning to see some strange behavior in him...

What does love look like?
(Column ~ 10/04/01)
Love is a many-splendored thing. Love makes the world go round. It's what the world needs now. What do you suppose love looks like? There must be thousands of examples: A newborn baby, cradled in his mother's arms, love born. A work-worn hand wiping the tears from a young smooth cheek, love born of experience...

School question
(Column ~ 10/04/01)
Dear Editor, After listening to others and myself on the radio about the bond issue going down to defeat, yes, we need better schools and other things such as bigger kitchens in the ward schools. In order to understand better how the schools operate, a person should work there first, and then they could see the other side of the picture. You can blame everything or anything you want. The blame should go squarely on this administration...

Teacher quality counts
(Column ~ 10/04/01)
I voted no on the school bond issue. Two adults work in this household, and we can still barely make ends meet. The gas bill went up, the water and sewer is going up again, trash collection is going up, there is talk of NPPD increasing rates- there is just no surplus in this house to go around...

Cooperation pays off for small towns
(Column ~ 10/04/01)
America's leading business publication, the Wall Street Journal, recently wrote about a cooperative approach to problem-solving in one of Nebraska's communities. Can you guess which city or town it was? Would you say Omaha? Lincoln? Grand Island? Or, maybe even McCook?...

Water questions
(Column ~ 10/04/01)
Dear Editor, I read with much interest the article in tonight's Gazette (Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001) "McCook water rates still lower than others." May I respond to the "surveyor" -- you failed to bring out some important factors in your survey: 1. The size of the smaller towns you surveyed vs. the size of McCook affords McCook the luxury of having the consumer base to raise revenue to effectively run the water system, while much of the cost is the same no matter the size of the town...

Selective scriptures
(Column ~ 10/04/01)
Dear Editor, Morrison (Former Gov. Frank Morrison, Heritage Days prayer breakfast, Gazette Sept. 28) is very selective in his scriptures and his interpretation of the scriptures. This same Jesus said "There shall be wars and rumors of wars. Fear not, little flock, these things must be." Also, Apostle Paul in Romans 13 lays out how love works ... and governments ... "the civil authorities (governments) are instruments of God's wrath to punish the doer of wrong."...

Barking dog spoiled day
(Column ~ 10/04/01)
I'd like to thank Marie Owen, Laura Ford and the performers and everyone else who made Heritage Days a success. But one guy brought his dog to the park and let it bark all the way through the entertainment. I'm not a dog hater -- I own a dog -- but if you can't control your animals, don't bring them to a public function...

Thanks for the flag
(Column ~ 10/04/01)
Thank you McCook Daily Gazette for the beautiful full page display of our American flag. In driving around McCook, I have noticed that the flag picture is displayed in many windows. It is sad, but there are people among us here who are not allowed to be patriotic or to honor "Old Glory" or its semblance thereof, but they surely enjoy the liberties they have under our flag of freedom! As President Bush said, "either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists." Amen...
