BENKELMAN, Nebraska -- Clifford Alfred "Shorty" Chipperfield, 87, died Friday (March 11, 2011), at the Dundy County Hospital in Benkelman.

He was born Sept. 9, 1923, in Cheyenne County, Kansas to Harold Mitchell and Hattie Maude (Merklin) Chipperfield. He graduated from Bird City High School in Bird City, Kansas in 1941.

He entered the U.S. Navy on July 8, 1944, and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on June 15, 1946.

On April 5, 1949, he was united in marriage to Dorothy E. Johnson in St. Francis, Kansas. The couple made their home in Bird City where he was a self-employed mechanic. The couple moved to Benkelman in 1990, and he worked as a mechanic for Knowles Ford until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and daughter, Betty Mansfield.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 62 years, Dorothy Chipperfield of Benkelman; son, Lyle Chipperfield of Kellogg, Idaho; brother, Walter Chipperfield and wife, Fannie of Atwood, Kansas; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial services are Wednesday, 10 a.m. MDT, at Trinity Baptist Church in Benkelman with the Rev. Paul Folk and Marcine Farmer officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Benkelman Cemetery.
