SMITHFIELD, Nebraska -- Larry Eugene Evans, 60, passed away on Monday (Jan. 24, 2011), at his home southwest of Smithfield.

Larry was born May 12, 1950, in Oxford, Nebraska, the youngest of two children born to Melvin and Berdina (Schievelbein) Evans. He received his education from Elwood Public Schools.

Following his education, Larry served his country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam until his honorable discharge and returned to the family farm south of Smithfield.

On May 11, 1979, he was united in marriage to Vicki Muller in Elwood and to this union three sons were born: Nathan Eugene, Joshua Michael and Lucas LeRoy. The family made their home in the Smithfield/Bertrand area, where Larry was employed as a truck driver. He was also employed by the Village of Bertrand and Village of Loomis, until returning to his roots of farming south of Smithfield.

Larry was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, camping, fishing, and enjoyed being involved with his sons' demolition projects. He was a past member of the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood and current member of the Hope Lutheran Church of Smithfield. Larry was also a member of the N.R.A. He loved entertaining guests, whether it was at a barbeque, cooking at home or at Don's Garage socializing with his friends. This is when Larry was most comfortable. Most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He leaves to mourn his passing his mother, Berdina Evans of Bertrand; three sons, Nate Evans, Josh Evans and his fiancé, Segrid Torrey and Luke Evans and his wife, Jessica, all of Bertrand; five grandchildren, Gunner, Brooklyn, Katelyn and Brayden Evans and Leyton Torrey; his former wife and best friend, Vicki Evans of Lexington, Nebraska; brother-in-law, Dan Louthan of Smithfield; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Evans; daughter, Angela Ann; and sister, Carol Ann Louthan.

Funeral services for Larry E. Evans will be conducted from the Hope Lutheran Church of rural Smithfield, Nebraska on Saturday, 11 a.m., with the Rev. Cathi Braasch officiating. Interment is in the Hope Lutheran Cemetery in Gosper County, Nebraska with military honors provided by the Bertrand Veterans Organization in conjunction with the U.S. Army National Guard Military Honors Team.

Visitation is at the Sandstrom Funeral Home in Bertrand on Friday, 1--8 p.m.

A memorial has been established in his memory and will be designated at a later date.
