Sertoma all-star volleyball in McCook Saturday night

Friday, June 18, 2010

Serves, spikes and sets take center stage in McCook Saturday night in the 19th annual Sertoma All-Star Volleyball Classic.

The all-star volleyball contest matches many of southwest Nebraska's top senior players from the 2009 season. The match is set to begin Saturday at 7 p.m. at the McCook Senior High School gymnasium.

McCook will have three players on the East All-Star roster -- outside hitters Jayde Aufrecht and Kelsey Pohl, and right side/outside hitter Katie West.

Doors at the Senior High gym open Saturday at 6 p.m. Teams will begin warm-ups at 6:30 p.m. The all-star coaches, players and their parents, along with game officials, will be introduced about 7 p.m., followed by the National Anthem and the opening serve.

Players are selected from high schools representing 12 counties in southwest Nebraska -- Red Willow, Chase, Dawson, Dundy, Frontier, Furnas, Gosper, Hayes, Hitchcock, Keith, Lincoln and Perkins. Schools in the area are divided into east and west by a line running from McCook to North Platte.

Area coaches are asked to submit nominations of senior players from their respective schools who are worthy of playing in the all-star game. The all-star coaching staffs use input from area coaches to help select the players.

The West All-Stars hold a 11-7 edge in the series that started in 1983.

The 2010 East team will be coached by Codina Schutz of Elwood and Katie VanWesten of Cambridge. The West coaching staff included Monica Cole and Penny Hite of Perkins County.

Each team was scheduled to hold four practice sessions this week in preparation for Saturday's contest.

The all-star match will be five sets in length regardless of the outcome of each set.

Admission prices to the Sertoma Classic will be $6 each for students and adults ages 13 years and older, and $4 each for students ages 5-12 years. Children under 5 years old will be admitted free of charge.

Cathy Carman, local Sertoma volleyball chairperson, said proceeds from the annual all-star event are used by the McCook Area Sertoma Club to help support hearing screening and community projects, with an emphasis on youth-oriented projects.
