Elsie Rogers

MOUNT ANGEL, Ore. -- Elsie Winona Rogers, 94, died Wednesday (Oct. 11, 2006), at Mount Angel, Ore.

She was born Jan. 4, 1912, in a sod house on the farm of her parents, William and Ada (Terrell) Hay at Trenton. Her early years of education were obtained at a one-room rural school. After graduating from Trenton High School, she taught several years in a country school, teaching all eight grades.

In 1941, Elsie moved to Washington D.C. to work at the capital in the office of Nebraska senator, Edward Burke, during his campaign for reelection. After attending Strayer Business College, she was employed at the Carnegie Institute. During World War II, Elsie was project manager for National Capital Housing.

In 1942 in Washington D.C., Elsie married Donald J. Rogers, a career Navy man. The family lived for several years in Hawaii and Guam before settling in Oxnard, Calif., in 1953. She taught kindergarten while stationed in Guam.

She graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara and then taught several years in the Oxnard School District.

After her retirement, she volunteered at St. John's Medical Center, the Rose Avenue Senior Center, the Bible Fellowship Church, and the Fleet Reserve Auxiliary.

She was living in a retirement home in Mount Angel at the time of her death.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; five brothers, Charles, Virgil, Clarence, Keith, and Gaylord; and a sister, Eula Andrijeski.

Survivors include three sons, Ron and wife, Julie of Silverton, Ore., Larry and his wife, Carol of Yorba Linda, Calif., and Wayne of Grant Pass, Ore.; one sister, Effie Carlson of McCook; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Inurnment will be at the columbarium at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, Calif.
