Karen and Luke Bortner

Karen Jean Hock and Luke Robert Bortner were united in marriage June 19, 2004, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in McCook with the Rev. Paul Colling of Lexington, uncle of the bride, officiating and the Rev. Gary Brethour, pastor of St. Patrick's, assisting.

Parents of the couple are Bernard and Carol Hock of Culbertson and Robert and Barbara Bortner of McCook.

Honored guests and grandparents of the couple are Mary Colling, (the late Francis J. Colling), (the late Leslie and Maxine Hock), Charles and Lois Quigley, Gene and Gemadine Bortner, great grandmothers Dorothy Bortner and Helen Schlegel all of McCook.

The bride wore a white, satin, floor-length gown with embroidered silver lace and pearl appliques accenting the scalloped bodice, skirt, and hemline. The embroidery also cascaded down the double aproned cathedral-length train. Her finger-tip veil was held by a silver and crystal tiara. She carried a bouquet of yellow roses, white daises, and stephanotis with her mother's rosary entwined in the bouquet. The bridegroom wore a western-styled black tuxedo and a double yellow rose boutonniere.

The maid of honor was Elizabeth Hock of Culbertson, cousin of the bride. Bridesmaids were Sarah Hock, Amanda Hock, and Melissa Hock of Culbertson, sisters of the bride. They each wore a floor-length, two-piece, butter-colored, satin gown accented with crystal beaded trim at the empire waist. Each carried a smaller bouquet similar to the bride's.

The bride's personal attendant was Sharon DeVries of Ponte Vedra, Fla., aunt of the bride.

The best man was Heath Bortner of McCook, brother of the bridegroom. Groomsmen were Cole Carpenter of Leoti, Kan., Pat Harding of Cambridge and Edward Hock of Culbertson, cousin of the bride, wearing western styled black tuxedos.

The flower girls were Elite Adam of Omaha, niece of the bridegroom, Allison Corcoran of Fort Collins, Colo., and Caitlin DeVries of Ponte Vedra, cousins of the bride. They wore white, satin, floor-length dresses and tiaras, carrying baskets of yellow, blue and white flowers.

The ring bearer was Jack DeVries of Ponte Vedra, cousin of the bride, attired like the bridegroom.

Ushers were Neal Hock of Jacksonville, Ill., brother of the bride, Andrew Hock, cousin of the bride, and Nathan Cole, both of Culbertson and Doug Snyder of Maywood.

Acolyte was David Colling of McCook, uncle of the bride. Dan Colling of Parkville, Mo., uncle of the bride, was the lector. Altar servers were Kevin Hock of Culbertson and Vincent Mines of Lincoln, cousins of the bride. Offertory gift carriers were Ron and Joyce Colling of Osceola, godparents of the bride, and Judy Bontjes of Whapeton, N.D., godmother of the bridegroom.

Guest book attendants were Jessica Bortner of McCook, sister-in-law of the groom, and Laura Colling of Lincoln, cousin of the bride.

Flower attendants were Carrol Bortner and Ginny Bortner of McCook, aunts of the groom, Lynette Smith of Omaha and Anne McCarville of Lincoln, cousin's of the bride.

Program and bubble attendants were Alesia Hock, Nathan Quigley, Megan Corcoran and Dane Quigley, cousins of the couple.

Marie Coffey of McCook was the organist. Vocalists were Lori Bortner of Reno, Nev., sister of the groom, Diana Colling of Osceola and Julie Colling of Omaha, cousins of the bride. Julie also played oboe and Ron Colling, uncle of bride, was the guitarist.

The reception was at the Red Willow County Community Building in McCook. Host couples were Amy and Rick Adam of Omaha, sister and brother-in-law of the groom and Chris and Janice Corcoran of Fort Collins, Colo., uncle and aunt of the bride.

Cake and punch servers were Jo Ann Hock of Culbertson, Jeannine Schendt of Lawrence, aunts of the bride, Kiok Quigley of Bonner Springs, Kan., Jeanine Quigley of Indianola, aunts of the groom. Gift attendants were Jeanie and Nessa Hock of Culbertson, cousins of the bride .

Floral arrangements were made by Mary Hock of Culbertson, Barbara Graham of Fort Collins, Colo., aunts of the bride, and the bride's mother. They were assisted by Janice Corcoran, Sharon DeVries and Kris Mustion of Culbertson for the reception.

The bride is a junior at Fort Hays State University and the bridegroom, a graduate of Colby Community College, is a farmer/rancher. The couple lives north of McCook.
