ATWOOD, Kan. -- Paula A. Kastens, 93, died Saturday (Jan. 2, 2010), at Rawlins County Hospital in Atwood.

She was born June 20, 1916, near Carleton, to Louis and Emilie (Dunker) Neuhart. She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Friedensau, received her formal education at the Lutheran elementary school in Friedensau, as well as Trinity Lutheran School north of Ludell. She was confirmed on Palm Sunday, April 14, 1930.

On Sept. 18, 1938 she married Harry A. Kastens and resided on a rural Herndon farmstead, until October 1994, when she moved to Atwood.

She was preceded in death by several brothers; several sisters and one grandson.

She is survived by her husband, Harry A. Kastens; four sons, the Rev. Dennis A. Kastens and wife, Alice, Larry J. Kastens and wife, Deanna, Gary D. Kastens and wife, Dianna, Terry L. Kastens and wife, Marilyn; two daughters, June C. Hesterman and husband, Marvin, Jayne Y. Niermeier and husband, Niles; several brothers; one sister; grandchildren; step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren and a step-great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services are Wednesday, 10 a.m., at the Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church in Atwood, Kan., with the Rev. Don White officiating. Interment will be at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetary in Ludell, Kan.

Memorials may be given in her name to the Orphan Grain Train and Gods Little Saints' Preschool, and may be left at Williams Funeral Home of Atwood, which is in charge of the arrangements.
