Commissioners visited by legislative hopeful

Tuesday, February 10, 2026

The Red Willow County Board of Commissioners met Monday, Feb. 9, at the Red Willow County Courthouse, with the meeting called to order at 8:30 a.m. by the chair. All members were present.

Commissioners reviewed accounts payable claims and approved the agenda as presented.

At 9 a.m., the board opened the floor for citizens’ comments. Tim Anderson of Sutton, a candidate for the 38th District legislative seat, introduced himself to the commissioners. Commissioner Randy Dean then mentioned the value of the inheritance taxes as an unpredictable, but vital revenue stream best suited for use as a reserve fund. Anderson acknowledged the controversial nature of the tax and, through a personal anecdote, expressed an understanding of its value to counties.

Anderson expressed appreciation for the commissioners’ input and said that, if elected, he would visit and consult with county boards before the start of each session.

The commissioners thanked Anderson for the visit. No action was taken.

Having no business to be considered by the Board of Equalization, the board considered items on the consent agenda, including routine approval of minutes, accounts payable claims and declaration of surplus items for the Red Willow County Sheriff’s Office. Commissioners also approved a memorandum of understanding with Dundy, Hitchcock, Furnas, Frontier and Chase Counties regarding prisoner boarding at the county jail.

All items on the consent agenda were approved on a unanimous vote.

The board reviewed correspondence, including the resignation of Health Director Brandy Bird and notice of a state jail inspection scheduled for February 27. The board also reviewed a general permit from the Nebraska Department of Water, Energy and Environment related to Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) activities at Daffer Feedyard.

Turning to the Fair Board, commissioners acknowledged the resignation of Gail Rippe and appointed Barrett Eiler as a replacement for a term to expire Dec. 31, 2027.

The board received the Clerk of the District Court’s monthly revenue report, which totaled $1,718.51, then approved a letter of support being sent to the U.S. Department of Agriculture on behalf of Community Hospital.

The meeting adjourned following the quarterly jail inspection.
