Wolves now 17-3 as January warms up; Trojans beat Paxton

CAMBRIDGE, Neb. — A well-earned sweep at Cambridge only ignited the Maywood-Hayes Center basketball teams through Sandhills-Thedford last weekend.
The end result?
Both May-Hay teams are rolling at 9-1 and 8-2, respectively, as basketball really heats up this week.
Coach Kolby Hamilton’s boys (8-2) had to overcome a hot Cambridge start for their 56-49 victory on Friday.
Junior Kade Broz brilliantly woirked inside to 16 points as all those practices against taller teammates helped him make six of 10 mostly inside shots.
The Wolves rallied from 14-10 down early with a 13-4 third quarter — then held off a determined Cambridge comeback.
“We just had to stick to the process,” Broz said.
Senior Sawyer Dibbern mixed in 13 points with junior Keenan Richards adding 10.
Dibbern drilled two clinching free throws to finish his 75 percent effort at the charity stripe (six for eight)(.
Broz pulled down ine rebounds, junior Oliver Anders eight and Dibbern another seven.
The Wolves overcame Cambridge senior Hodge Raburn’s 14 points, 11 from Brady Ahlemeyer and Maverick Webb tossing in 10.
Webb drilled a couple of early three-pointers to help the Trojans take their leads.
Meanwhile, the May-Hay girls are rolling at 9-1 with two impressive weekend wins.
They stifled Cambridge, 59-36, as junior Caylie Softley scored a game-high 21 points and senior Blayklee Farr mixed in 13 points.
Senior Karissa Stengel scored another 11. The Wolves contained most Cambridge shooters except for senior Mallory Springer netting 15 points.
On Saturday, the Wolves roared past Sandhills-Thedford by a 75-48 final. Stengel stepped up to score 23 points and Softley made plenty of great noise with 21 again. Farr added eight and freshman Paytyn Stengel scored six. They play at Hi-Line tonight.

On Saturday afternoon, Cambridge traveled to Paxton for a couple of games on the hardwood.
Folks, these games did not disappoint as they were both close. Cambridge ended up winning each game, but like we said, they were tight matchups, and we saw some great hoops.
The boys game was first, and it took an overtime period, but Cambridge won 64-58. Paxton had everything going in the first half, scoring almost anytime they wanted. The Tigers led at halftime, 43-31.
In the third quarter, Cambridge’s defense tightened up and held Paxton to two points, and it was 45-45 heading to the fourth quarter.
Cambridge was up with about three minutes to go after a Hodge Raburn three-pointer made it 57-53 in favor of the Trojans.
Paxton, though, battled back, and Tyler Markussen hit a shot late to tie things up at 57-57.
In the OT period, Cambridge found success on offense and sealed the game .
Hodge Raburn was in attack mode and led Cambridge with 30 points. Brady Ahlemeyer had 12 points for the Trojans, too. Braxton Mitchell totaled eight points, Braydon Miller had four, and Maverick
The girls game between the Trojans and the Tigers was an exciting one, too. Cambridge came out with the win, 57-52.
Mallory Springer hit three of four free throws late in the game, and Elisabeth Kubik made a late layup to secure the win.
Cambridge was led in scoring by Brooklyn Holtze with 18 points, and Mallory Springer had 16.
Elisabeth Kubik had nine points, Joslyn Holtze had seven, and Aspen Webb scored three.
