FRONTIER COUNTY, Neb. - Although the official count was 133, Phil Miles of Nebraska Game and Parks believes the number was higher—especially with four-legged friends included.

“Red Willow draws some of the largest numbers in the state for the first day hike,” said longtime coordinator Ronda Graff. “We always have the highest numbers.”

This year’s turnout was boosted by ideal conditions for exploring the trails. Families, avid runners, athletes, and those eager to burn off holiday calories set off on flexible routes ranging from 1 to 4 miles. Among them were the McCook Bison lady wrestlers, who kicked off their year with a three-mile trek to see some real-life bison.

The hike, organized by Graff, also tied into a national celebration of 250 years of Independence—the first of many commemorations planned for 2026.
