Special congratulations for the Bison men’s swim team

Dear Editor,

We would like to congratulate the Bison Men’s Swimming Medley Relay Team, sorry we’re a little late, for breaking our 1978 record. Gotta say, It’s about time!

We are very proud of our swimming careers in McCook, and now yours, and all of the past swimmers who dedicated so much time and effort to the sport. Especially all of those who trained in the, ‘Glorified Bathtub’ original McCook YMCA pool. Those two a day, 6 AM and 7 PM practices from late October to mid-February were an unbelievable grind. We would like to dedicate our 46 year record to Elva Backer, without her no one in South West Nebraska from the 1950’s into the 1990’s would know how to swim.

I know when any of us hear her name we can still hear her yelling ‘Hup, Hup, Hup, Hup’.

Congratulations, Job Well Done. Now get back in the pool and beat the other 5 records from the ‘70’s and ‘80’s!
