McCook’s amenities support heart health

Thursday, February 13, 2025

In today’s issue, the McCook Gazette is paying homage to American Heart Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease and promoting cardiovascular health. As the leading cause of death in the United States, heart disease affects millions of people each year, cutting lives short and placing an enormous burden on families and communities. However, knowledge and preventive measures can make a significant difference in reducing its impact.

American Heart Month, observed every February, is an opportunity for individuals to educate themselves on the importance of heart health. Organizations such as the American Heart Association and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute work tirelessly to spread awareness, provide educational resources, and encourage people to adopt heart-healthy habits. These include maintaining a nutritious diet, engaging in regular exercise, managing stress, maintaining a healthy weight, and getting sufficient sleep.

The statistics surrounding heart disease are sobering. It remains the leading cause of death for men, women, and individuals from most racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. Every 33 seconds, one person succumbs to cardiovascular disease, accounting for approximately 702,880 deaths in 2022 alone. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common type of heart disease, responsible for 371,506 deaths in the same year. Nearly one in 20 adults aged 20 and older has CAD, and approximately one in five deaths from cardiovascular diseases occur in adults under the age of 65.

Heart attacks, a critical consequence of heart disease, occur with alarming frequency. In the United States, someone has a heart attack every 40 seconds, totaling approximately 805,000 cases annually. Among these, 605,000 are first-time heart attacks, while 200,000 affect individuals who have previously experienced one. Alarmingly, about one in five heart attacks is silent, meaning the damage occurs without the individual realizing it. This is why understanding warning signs and taking early action is crucial in preventing severe health complications and fatalities.

While these numbers may be daunting, there is good news. Here in McCook, we are fortunate to have numerous resources designed to support an active and heart-healthy lifestyle. Our community boasts six recreational parks, a walking trail, a skate park, and horse-shoe pits. Those looking for team sports and recreation have access to sand volleyball courts, five lighted baseball diamonds, and nine practice fields, with even more enhancements planned for the future. Golf enthusiasts can enjoy an award-winning course, while disc golf players can look forward to the expansion of a second course.

For water lovers, McCook offers a new aquatic park, providing both fun and exercise for all ages. The YMCA is in the process of a capital improvement project, further enhancing what is already an expansive fitness facility. Additionally, an inclusive playground will soon offer a space where children of all abilities can engage in healthy, active play. All of these amenities are further complemented by the natural beauty of three nearby lakes, offering opportunities for fishing, boating, and outdoor recreation.

American Heart Month is a reminder that while heart disease remains a formidable challenge, we have the power to take charge of our health. By utilizing McCook’s many recreational opportunities and adopting heart-healthy habits, we can work together to build a healthier, more vibrant community. Let’s take this month as an opportunity to prioritize our hearts and encourage those around us to do the same.
