Fischer bill requires female crash test dummies

Thursday, May 9, 2024

WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Deb Fischer has introduced the "She DRIVES Act," which aims to enhance passenger vehicle safety by updating crashworthiness testing procedures.

The bill requires the use of advanced testing devices, including female crash test dummies, to address the disparity in crash testing standards, which primarily use male dummies. This bipartisan effort, supported by Senators Patty Murray, Marsha Blackburn, and Tammy Duckworth, seeks to mitigate the higher risk of serious injuries faced by women in car crashes. The legislation is based on research showing that women are more vulnerable to certain injuries and aims to rectify this by incorporating female crash test dummies and more advanced testing methods.

The bill is expected to save lives, prevent serious injuries, and result in significant economic savings. This initiative follows previous actions by Senator Fischer, including introducing legislation for a GAO study on crash test dummy standards and requesting information on efforts to update crash testing procedures.
