Ainsworth wins state semifinal, 54-53, on star's final shot

LINCOLN, Neb. — Senior Carter Nelson hit the winning shot in Ainsworth’s 54-53 win over Guardian Angels Central Catholic in Class D-1 state semifinal play at Devaney Sports Center.

Nelson’s a 6’4” Nebraska Cornhusker football recruit who drew interest from Alabama and Notre Dame among other power programs.

GACC (14-14 record), a No. 8 seed, upset No. 1 North Platte St. Patrick’s 42-40 during quarterfinals on Thursday.

The Bulldogs (20-7) are a Southwest Conference member who defeated McCook tsice this season. They will play No. 3 Johnson-Brock or No. 7 Plainview at 9 a.m. Saturday in Pinnacle Bank Arena. Watch for scores and updates.
