ATWOOD, Kan. - Roger Wayne Carlson, 79, of Atwood, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024, at the Rawlins County Health Center. He was born May 23, 1944, in Stratton, Neb., to Willis and Effie (Hay) Carlson. Roger graduated from Trenton High School. He then worked at the Atwood COOP service station where he became the manager until 1974. He moved his family to a farm north of Atwood in late 1974. Roger loved the farming life and continued to farm until 2019. Roger served on the COOP elevator board and the County Conservation District Board.

In 1964 he married Verjean Horinek. From this union, his children were Dean, Dennis, Becky, and Tyler. In 2001, Roger married Melinda (Tucker) Bell. From this union, Melinda’s children Gwen, Sarah and Susan enhanced the family.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents and brother Lanny. Survivors include his wife Melinda of the home in Atwood; children, Dean Carlson of Rogersville, Mo., Dennis and Stephanie Carlson of Haven, Kan., Becky Chvatal of Atwood, Tyler and Tonya Carlson of Sheridan, Wyo., Gwen and Greg Jones of Atwood, Sarah and Mike Thompson of Binghamton, NY, and Susan and Eric Flavin from Camolin County, Wexford, Ireland. Roger also has 19 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

Visitation is 4 - 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024, at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood. Funeral Service is 10:00 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2024, at the Herndon Covenant Church, Herndon, Kan., with burial in the Trenton Cemetery, Trenton, Neb.
