Wolves win, but 'Riders and Warriors fall in subdistricts

MAYWOOD, Neb. — Brady’s fast start bounced Southwest out of the girls’ D1-11 subdistrict, 41-38, in semifinal action Tuesday night.

The No. 3-seed Eagles soared ahead 10-4 through one quarter and carried a 21-15 lead into halftime.

Southwest (14-8 record) made quite a third-quarter run to close within one at 33-32.

Yet the Roughriders only tallied six fourth-period points while Brady (13-10) added another eight.

The Eagles advance into Thursday’s subdistrict title game against No. 1-seed Maywood-Hayes Center (20-2) starting at 6:30 p.m. in Maywood.

Southwest will likely need some good breaks to join the top 16 Class D-1 teams who will play state-qualifying district finals. The ’Riders were listed 21st on nsaahome.org following Tuesday’s setback.

Sophomore Kyra Nelms delivered 13 points and eight rebounds which led the No. 2 seed.

Sophomore Anikka Nelms added nine points while hitting three of her six field goals.

Junior Anastasia Gallegos followed with eight points, junior Atleigh Nelms three and senior Bryn Lampe two.

Gallegos grabbed seven rebounds and swiped three steals.

May-Hay 66,

Hi-Line 22

The No. 1 Wolves were super sharp during a 45-14 first half in Tuesday’s first D1-11 semifinal.

Amazingly, all 11 players hit shots with no May-Hay scoring more than sophomore Karissa Stengel’s team-high 11.

Stengel made five of eight field goals, swiped seven steals and pulled in five rebounds.

Freshman Jaylee Sellers netted nine points on three brilliant bombs from beyond that three-point arc.

Senior Ellie Broz and junior Kesli Cox tossed in eight points apiece.

Freshman Caylie Softely scored six, junior Reagan Stengel five and junior Kassidy Hatfield four.

Junior Aubrey Broz joined freshmen Grace Loomis and Ayleen Hernandez in adding two points each which completed the May-Hay total.Hi-Line finished a 3-21 season.

D1-9 at S.V.

OXFORD, Neb. — No. 1.-seed Southern Valley took a 21-1 lead and reached 24-1 overall with its 51-23 victory over Loomis Tuesday evening.

The D1-9 semifinal wins set up Thursday’s final showdown against 20-3 Alma, who eliminated Arapahoe 74-36 later on Tuesday.

Southern Valley has beaten Alma twice already this season. Both teams will likely advance into the 16-team district finals round.

Alma unleashed 70 points on Arapahoe to end the Warriors’ season at 11-13.
