May-Hay girls, SV Eagles roll in RPAC to Thursday semifinals

MAXWELL, Neb. — The Maywood-Hayes Center girls tipped off their RPAC tournament play with a 48-30 win over Dundy County-Stratton Monday.

Coach Kim Stengel’s Wolves (14-1 record) will play Paxton for the RPAC West title on Friday. The tourney concludes at MCC’s Graff Events Center with that annual Saturday championship game.

Freshman Caylie Softely’s 13 points topped the MayHay attack on Monday while slowing a rapidly-improving DC-S squad (8-10 overall).

Junior Kesli Cox tallied 10 points. The Wolves unleashed an 18-6 second quarter to lead 25-12 going into halftime.

Sophomore Karissa Stengel netted nine points, junior Kassidy Hatfield six and sophomore Blayklee Farr five.

Farr took down 10 rebounds.

Hitchcock 47 (OT)

MAXWELL, Neb. — The Hitchcock County girls (7-9) overcame a 23-9 first half but fell short in overtime against West No. 2 Paxton Monday evening.

Senior Katie Jarecke was crazy good after halftime while leading that Falcon comeback.

Jarecke scored 22 of her 27 points in the second half including an absoutely awesome FIVE three-pointers during the fourth period.

She added two points in OT yet Paxton (11-5) was able to avenge a 37-35 loss against the Falcons in Trenton last week.

Hitchcock’s Jill McArthur scored all eight of points after halftime. Senior Byanka Tyan added five points.

Southwest 42

BERTRAND, Neb. — The Southern Valley Eagles reached 16-1 and will play for an RPAC East title Friday against No. 1-seed Alma.

Southwest slipped to 10-6 with a first defeat in nine games. Sophomore Annika Nelms’ nine points topped the Roughriders while Kyra Nelms and Allison VanPelt each added eight.

BERTRAND, Neb. — A 16-5 fourth quarter denied the East No. 4 Cambridge girls’ upset quest Monday. No other details were obtained.
