Tigers, Roughriders, Falcons among area hoops winners

BARTLEY, Neb. — Southwest High’s girls evened their record at 5-5 with a 43-35 win over Hitchcock County Tuesday evening.

Junior defensive ace Allison VanPelt scored 10 points as did sophomore Kyra Nelms to lead a balanced Roughrider attack.

Kyra crashed the glass to secure a team-high 21 rebounds.

Junior Atleigh Nelms was also deeply involved, netting nine points while hitting three of five field goals.

Classmate Payton Truksa slipped another six points through the nets, senior Bryn Lampe scored four.

Sophomore Annika Nelms and junior Anastasia Gallegos each added two to complete the winning attack.

No individual stats were obtained for the visiting Falcons, who are now 4-6 this season.

Lampe’s six steals and seven rebounds from Gallegos were other Southwest highlights.

Coach Dennis Hentigen’s girls gained momentum for rival Cambridge to visit Friday evening.

The Hitchcock boys reached 5-4 despite 22 points from Southwest sophomore Houston Billeter.

Senior Jakub Walz’s 12 points and senior Nathan Rippe’s 11 kept Southwest (3-7) within striking range through this first game of 2024.

The Roughriders also host Cambridge on Friday.

Chase County 35

IMPERIAL, Neb. — The Dundy County-Stratton boys recovered from a loss at Axtell last weekend and reached 7-2 this season.

Chase County slipped to 3-6 even though senior Jensen Olsen did total 14 points and eight rebounds.

Senior Easton Fries added seven points, junior Camron Lempke five and junior Taylor Jablonski four.

The Chase County girls defeated Dundy County-Stratton for a split of this varsity basketball annual event.

No details were obtained but the Longhorns are now 3-6. DC-S saw its two-game win streak stopped.
