State seeks input on Medicaid dental care

Wednesday, December 27, 2023

LINCOLN, Neb. - Nebraska Medicaid has unveiled a comprehensive set of proposed changes to enhance dental care services starting January 1, 2024, and is inviting public feedback through a scheduled hearing on January 22, 2024, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Meadowlark Conference Room, 301 Centennial Mall South, Lincoln, NE 68509.

Collaborating with dental professionals statewide, Nebraska Medicaid aims to address accessibility issues and streamline operations for dental providers. The proposed changes include:

• Removal of Annual Dental Benefit Maximum: The current cap of $750 on dental care for adult members annually will be eliminated. This move aims to remove barriers for new and high-need members, enhancing access to care and simplifying administrative processes for dentists.

• Interruption of Denture Treatment Reimbursement: The reimbursement policy for dentures will shift to pay dentists at various stages of the treatment process, rather than only upon completion. This adjustment recognizes the extended nature and costs associated with acquiring dentures.

• Asymptomatic Wisdom Tooth Extraction Coverage: Aligning with commercial plans, Nebraska Medicaid will cover the extraction of asymptomatic wisdom teeth based on the provider's judgment. This change supports proactive prevention of future health issues and aligns with current industry practices.

• Services by Public Health Dental Hygienists: Beginning in 2024, select services provided by public health dental hygienists will be reimbursed for Medicaid members. This step is expected to improve dental access and overall dental health.

Nebraska Medicaid's Interim Director, Matt Ahern, emphasized the importance of community input, stating, "We cannot be successful without the valuable input and insights we get from our community members and stakeholders." The public hearing and comment period aim to ensure transparency and accountability in the decision-making process.

Interested individuals can provide feedback by emailing DHHS.MedicaidSPA@nebraska.gov or attending the public hearing on January 22, 2024. The input received will play a crucial role in finalizing the proposed dental changes to meet the needs of Nebraska Medicaid members.

Detailed information on the proposed changes, as well as the complete list of service codes, can be found at Nebraska Medicaid's official website. Updates and announcements related to the public comment period are available at Medicaid Dental Benefits Manager.
