LINCOLN, Neb. — The Cambridge Trojans hold No. 1 in all of Class D-2 while Southwest’s D-1 No. 2 entering district finals on Saturday.

They’ll be going from Aurora to Grant with two more area teams pursuing state tournament spots in Overton and Shickley.

With one more win apiece, the Gazette area will be buzzing in Lincoln arenas next week.

Cambridge tips off state qualifiers Saturday as the No. 1 Trojans (25-4) take on Hay Springs (22-10) at 2 p.m. (1 mountain time) at Perkins County High School in Grant.

The Hay Springs Hawks captured D-2’s 16th seed when they swept Cody-Kilgore, 3-0, for a subdistrict title.

They’re a young team as sophomore Julia Russell ripped 10 kills and classmate Mya Turman drilled nine.

Senior Gabby Twarling served four aces.

Cambridge earned the No. 1 seed thanks to a thrilling five-set win over previous No. 1 Overton Tuesday evening.

Ironically, Overton (28-3) is seeded D-2 No. 2 and get No. 15 Wauneta-Palisade (15-15) for Saturday’s D2-2 final.

The Broncos have been finishing strong with six wins in their last eight matches.

W-P and Overton are set to begin at 2 p.m.

Meanwhile, Southwest takes a road trip to Aurora despite being seeded second behind only D-1 No. 1 Guardian Angels Central Catholic.

The Roughriders (28-3 record) will venture into Aurora High for a match against No. 15 Plainview at 5 p.m.

Plainview Pirates are 19-14 following thier 25-14, 25-21, 25-19 subfinal sweep of Tri County Northeast in Tuesday’s title match.

Southern Valley (19-9) completes the quartet of area teams trying to reach state in Lincoln next week.

The No. 13-seed Eagles face a tall task against No. 4 Bruning-Davenport-Shickley (26-4). First swings are set for 5 p.m. at the Shickley-based school.
