Bison face record-setting rusher with playoff spot in limbo

Chadron junior Quinn Bailey (21) has averaged 208 rushing yards per game this season with 24 touchdowns. He broke free from Alliance tacklers like Jett Herian (13) for 326 last week with a 93-yard TD.

CHADRON, Neb. — Remember any movie where the hero attempts to defuses a bomb while seconds tick away toward ultimate doom?

Okay, ultimate doom might be a bit too strong — but the McCook Bison basically face this task Friday night.

Their state playoff hopes depend on defusing Chadron’s 5’8” pack of dynamite: junior tailback Quinn Bailey.

Bailey’s scored 25 touchdowns, averaged 208 rush yards per game and — BOOM — he went off for his biggest game yet last week.

Chadron (5-3 record) had just suffered a huge 15-yard penalty and pushed back to its own seven against the Alliance Bulldogs.

BOOM! Bailey promptly goes 93 yards to one of his four touchdowns in a 41-26 Cardinals win.

Bailey totaled 326 rush yards overall on 25 carries (13.8 yards a pop) and has set Chadron’s career rushing record with still Friday and all next season to go.

However, Q.B. will be running into a hot McCook defense that only allowed 72 rush yards to 7-1 Adams Central last week.

The Patriots were actually 7-0 until they ventured into Weiland Field.

Bailey also ran wild against the same Alliance Bulldogs burned for 57 McCook Bison points one week earlier.

Plus the Cardinals’ defense allowed 506 total yards to Alliance.

Bulldog quarterback Landon Crowe found little success vs. the Bison defense.

Against Chadron, Crowe completed 32 passes with Alliance’s Jonah Amil and Tristen Timbers catching 18 for 302.

Plus Chadron’s 1-3 vs. teams with better than .500 records.

That’s all good news for the McCook Bison (4-4), who are aiming to take a three-game win streak into their 23rd straight state playoffs.
