Bison push Bison Invite champs and 'Riders to finish
McCOOK, Neb. — They put 7-1 Gering on the ropes and certainly didn’t let 11-1 Southwest sweep them out of this annual Bison Invitational.
Overall, the McCook Bison delivered a strong performance on Saturday as they placed fourth among eight teams despite a 1-2 record.
They won four sets and lost four in their 1-2 tourney performance.
“In the home invite this weekend I felt that we made some progress as a whole group,” coach Trevor Hoins confirmed. “Girls played hard in all three games and we had our chances in each round. In the second round of the tournament ,I thought we played well against a solid Gering team that is now 7-1 on the year.”
Gering won the championship, sweeping Panhandle rival Alliance in Saturday’s title match.
But in semifinal play, the Bison (4-8 record) jumped on Gering for a 25-21 opening win.
Not only did senior Kori Rippen put down nine kills, sophomore Ashlyn Randel and freshman Cali Crawford equally clobbered their way to another 10.
Rippen also covered the home court with 22 defensive digs.
Gering retaliated with a 25-12 beatdown, but that decisive third set was tight until those Bulldogs prevailed 25-21.
McCook had opened with a strong 25-17, 25-13 victory over 4-9 Valentine where Rippen began her 32-kill day with 11. The Bison basically controlled this sometimes tricky early match throughout.
Following that tough Gering match, McCook still recovered and gave 11-1 Southwest another good push.
The Roughriders (11-1) took third place on a well-earned 25-23 first win before McCook took set two 25-18.
Sophomore Karstyn Porter was finishing a strong 60-assist day as she delivered 19.
McCook also unleashed its best serving performance as Porter led five aces among four players.
Overall we are getting closer to being consistent when we play,” Hoins concluded.
