McCOOK, Neb. — Benjamin Mestl of Henderson, Nebraska is a second-year (P2) student at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He’s currently employed as a pharmaceutical intern at U-Save Pharmacy and Medical Supply in McCook. Benjamin says his internship has already taught him “how to be part of a new work team” and what his role is on that team. He’s learned plenty of different aspects of pharmaceutical work, he says, including setup of CPAP machines and fitting customers with walkers, as well as the correct way to call patients and review their medication lists to ensure everything is up-to-date. “I have learned so much and I still have two more weeks of learning to go, so I can’t wait to see what else I get to do,” he says.

Benjamin hopes to finish pharmacy school and someday return to a rural community to work in a pharmacy. He recommends internships to future pharmacy students:

“I would recommend this internship because this pharmacy is not like many others. You can learn anything from dispensing medications to helping people find the right walker. McCook is also a great community with many things to do here while on your internship.”

Angela Langan, a pharmacist at U-Save, says interns greatly benefit her company:

“U-Save Pharmacy & Medical Supply enjoys hiring pharmacy interns as they keep us abreast of all that is going on at the University level. They bring fresh ideas that can benefit the entire store. Their energy is appreciated by staff and customers alike. They allow full-time employees to take the vacations that they deserve. Lastly, we are always excited to introduce young professionals to Southwest Nebraska and show them the benefits of living here. Ideally, we hope that they will return to the area to practice pharmacy when they graduate from professional school.”
