What a day! Bison deliver TD, MVP in All-Star victory
SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. — Rarely will an “itch” lead to so many smiles like the McCook Bison buddies were enjoying at Saturday’s West Nebraska All-Star Game.
Adam Dugger was quarterbacking his first game since last fall’s broken leg, and the 2022 all-stater galloped for nearly 100 yards in a 35-7 East team victory.
“He was running it well, he was passing it well and oh yeah, he was smiling,” East coach Jeff Gross confirmed in the McCook legend’s first game on a football sideline since 2020.
“Adam took off on about a 50-yard run and we scored 21 straight points after that,” he added.
Yet there many other well-worth-it moments for Gross, his Bison and the East All-Star team.
Jacob Gomez-Wilson returned to tailback following leg injuries that shut down his final Bison track season.
“I’d say Jacob had 10 really good runs out there,” Gross proclaimed about McCook’s leading rusher through the last three seasons.
Senior Lucas Gomez-Wilson also mixed in some good carries, but of course the C-1 all-state receiver scored after catching a Dugger pass.
“He went one-on-one (with his defender) and beat him on about a five-yard pass,” Gross declared about the East’s fifth and final TD. Plus favorite blocker and all-state lineman Eli Kehler was protecting Dugger or clearing paths all game.
North Platte fullback Brock Roblee followed those linemen’s blocks to three more East touchdowns.
“It was a really good day. Our guys walked off with one more win and I cured my itch (for coaching),” Gross said. “Plus we had an all-star coaching staff.”
Current McCook head coach Joe Vetrovsky was among those assisting the Bison great.
Gross also praised area eight-man players like Arapahoe linemen Cooper Wendland and Dylan Bahe along with Cambridge athlete Kohan Grindle. Hitchcock County’s Keegan Shuler excelled for the West.
