GOTHENBURG, Neb. — No drama was needed as McCook High’s boys won six events and ran away with the Dutch Zorn Invitational team title on Thursday.

Senior Lucas Gomez-Wilson continued setting tracks on fire with two more championship featuring career-best times.

Senior Kaden Jernigan returned from injuries to help lead a 1600-meter victory.

Plus senior Evan Mai added another jumping title to his season while classmate Alex Messinger also delivered a big win.

However, here are better insights from coach Tom Sughroue.

“We as a coaching staff were very pleased with the performance of our guys yesterday. We had some very nice marks all the way through the meet.

We scored points in 12 of the 17 events and in some events we scored more than one athlete!

That’s really good considering the competition level that was present at the Gothenburg invitational. We had many highlights on the day but none were better than Lucas Gomez-Wilson winning 4 gold medals on the day.

Lucas won the 100, 200, ran a leg on our 4x1 and 4x400 meter relays! It has been many years since we had an individual win 4 golds at an invitational!

So having Lucas do so was a very special day for him and the team!”
