GERING, Neb. — The warm winter Thursday brought a meltdown McCook High fans really didn’t want to see.

Leading 30-23 at halftime where the margin earlier reached 12 points, McCook saw Gering’s Bulldogs unleashed 26 points during that third quarter alone.

The Bison even worse only scored three fourth-period points as Gering essentially cruised to a 64-46 comeback victory.

Max Greeley’s 28 points mainly went through after halftime and followed his 50-point effort against Torrington, Wyo., recently.

““I told them being down seven on our home floor is not that big of a deal,” Gering coach Rick Winkler told the Scottsbluff Star-Herald. “We just need to hit shots and we need to know where he (No. 11) is at all the time and make them work on defense. Max really started to take over and hit some shots and once he did everyone else did. It just goes from there.”

The Bison (13-7 record) opened an early floodgate of 20 first-quarter points.

Senior Jacob Gomez-Wilson scored a quick early four and classmate Evan Humphrey’s first long-range three made it 9-3.

McCook’s lead reached 20-11 then 25-13 with senior Adam Dugger even making his first two baskets of this season.

Dugger returned for the first time since breaking a bone in leg during state football playoffs on Oct. 29.

Yet everything changed even though junior Mitchel Cole’s putback made it 35-26.

Gering ran off 14-0 and 11-0 second-half runs to spark the stunning turnaround. McCook plays at Scottsbluff tonight.

BISON (13-7) — Evan Humphrey 21 points, Keegan Johnson 8, Jacob Gomez-Wilson 4, Adam Dugger 4, Brett Fraker 2, Mitchel Cole 2, Bryson Gullion 1. GERING (11-9) — Max Greeley’s game-high 28 points inspired Gering.
