Bison boys coach's insights into SWC wrestling

BROKEN BOW, Neb. — McCook wrestling coach Nick Umscheid offered these insights following his team's top five finish among eight competing in the boys' Southwest Conference tournament on Thursday:

"This was a good last tune up before District competition next week. Our conference tournament is always highly competitive and it delivered once again on Thursday. We had several of our varsity wrestlers place in the top four of their respective weight classes.

Our highest finisher on the day was at 145lbs., Tristan Cambell earned 2nd place. Tristan defeated a pretty good wrestler from Ainsworth in the semifinals by pin. He had a rematch in the championship finals against the Cozad wrestler whom he went into overtime the first time they wrestled. Once again it was a close match and Tristan fell short 3-1.

He wrestled a very good match but just wasn't able to get the takedown needed to tie the score.

Trenton Raile, Alex Anthony, Quentin Terry and Spencer Steinbeck all picked up 3rd place finishes in their weight classes.

All of these wrestlers competed well against some top notch competition. They all picked up some wins and have some momentum and confidence going into the postseason next week. Also placing on the day was Jose Campos at 195lbs. Jose finished in 4th place.

On the JV side, several of our wrestlers came home with the championship bracket. Jack Siegfried, Kalen McCorkle, and Eidos Klein.

All three of these wrestlers are underclassmen who have shown great potential and promise. It was good to see them and all our JV wrestlers compete hard on the mats Thursday making themselves better and gaining valuable mat time and experience."

The Bison will wrestle their Class B district tourney on Friday and Saturday in Ogallala.
